Azithromycin

A broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.

How Azithromycin Works

Azithromycin works by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacterial cells, preventing the production of proteins necessary for bacterial growth and replication. This action helps the immune system eliminate the infection.

Uses of Azithromycin

Azithromycin is prescribed to treat the following bacterial infections:

• Respiratory Tract Infections: Bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, and pharyngitis.
• Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Cellulitis, impetigo.
• Ear Infections: Otitis media (middle ear infections).
• Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Chlamydia, gonorrhea (in combination with other medications).
• Other Infections:
  • Traveler's diarrhea caused by bacteria.
  • Certain cases of typhoid fever.
  • Prevention and treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in individuals with HIV.

Dosage and Administration

• Swallow the tablet or capsule with a glass of water.
• Can be taken with or without food; taking with food may reduce stomach upset.
• Avoid antacids containing aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours of taking Azithromycin.

Precautions and Warnings

Not Suitable For:

• Individuals allergic to Azithromycin, erythromycin, or other macrolide antibiotics.
• Patients with severe liver disease or a history of jaundice caused by previous antibiotic use.
• Those with a history of serious heart rhythm issues, such as QT prolongation.

Use With Caution:

• In individuals with kidney or liver impairment.
• In patients with a history of myasthenia gravis (Azithromycin may worsen symptoms).
• During pregnancy or breastfeeding (only if prescribed by a doctor).

Potential Drug Interactions:

• May interact with blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), antacids, or medications that affect heart rhythm.
• Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

Less Common Side Effects:

• Vomiting

Rare but Serious Side Effects:
